Electric Motors

Aqua Marine Supply stocks a wide range of electric motors for our hoists in two main categories.  Belt drive hoists require a rigid base (footed) electric motor while direct drive gearboxes require "C-Face" style motors which are round body motors with no mounting foot.

Understanding Nameplate Information

Nameplate data is often abbreviated and can be confusing to consumers.  See the below breakdown of important technical data for our motors.


HP: Rated horsepower of the motor

Fr: Frame size - This is an industry term and dictates several dimensions as well as shaft size

RPM: Output speed category -  Specific speed varies from motor to motor slightly.  Our motors are 4-pole motors which are the 1725 (1800) RPM category

V: Compatible circuit voltage - 115/230 means the motor can be installed on either a 115V or 230V circuit

A: Running amperage - 12.2 / 6.1 means the motor draws 12.2 amps on a 115V circuit and 6.1 on a 230V circuit. Peak amperage at startup is not a published spec and can vary from installation to installation.

Enclosure: TENV, TEFC, ODP
- TENV = Totally Enclosed Non Ventilated - Sealed motor with timed duty cycle (usually 15 minute). Most of our motors are TENV
- TEFC = Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled - Vented motor with fan shroud which allows the motor to operate continuously.  Some of our motors have been TEFC but not ideal due to increased risk of water intrusion.  Our drives and hoists do not require continuous operation in a boat lift application.
- ODP = Open Drip Proof - Open frame motor for air cooling to allow continuous operation

SF: Service Factor - This is a multiplier that indicates how much the motor can be overloaded for short periods of time.  An SF of 1.15 would indicate that the motor can output 15% more power than the rated label HP for a short period.  We refer to these motors as "heavy duty" or "HD"

Thermal Protection: Device that can cut the power to the motor to protect it against overload.  This is essentially a circuit breaker that can trip to prevent permanent damage to the motor.  Our motors do not utilize thermal/overload protection due to cost, complexity, and operating environment.
